This study aimed to establish the role of faith-based radio programming in strategic
peacebuilding during Kenya’s 2022 general elections. Specifically, the study aimed to:
determine the existing faith-based radio programs aired and their effectiveness in strategic
peacebuilding; examine the thematic focus of peace messages disseminated by faith-based
radio stations; establish the role of editorial policies of faith-based radio stations in
strategic peacebuilding, and; investigate the challenges faced by faith-based radio stations
in strategic peacebuilding, all with a focus on Kenya’s 2022 general elections. The study
was anchored on the tenets of the peace journalism theory, the libertarian theory of mass
media, and the social responsibility theory of mass media, and it adopted a pragmatist
research philosophy. A mixed methods research approach, dominantly integrating
qualitative procedures and embedding quantitative techniques was adopted. The study
applied the concurrent embedded mixed methods design where the primary method was
qualitative, while the embedded/secondary method was quantitative, to support and enrich
the findings. Qualitative data were collected using in-depth interviews, focus group
discussions, a key informant interview, and a semi-structured questionnaire. A
quantitative approach was only used to provide descriptive statistics such as frequencies,
percentages, and counts. Purposive sampling was used to select seven faith-based radio
stations, as well as the sample size of one hundred and nineteen (119) respondents
comprising program directors, presenters, producers, and listeners. Results were presented
using a combination of narratives, graphs, charts and tables. The study found out that faith
based radio programming played a vital role in promoting peace during Kenya’s 2022
general elections. By drawing on religion’s moral authority, community trust, and wide
listenership, these stations discouraged inflammatory rhetoric and encouraged dialogue
and reconciliation. Although faith-based radio effectively combines spiritual guidance
with civic education, its contribution remains under recognized in policy and academic
discussions. Persistent challenges such as financial constraints, political bias, and limited
government support hinder its full potential. Greater recognition, regulatory support, and
journalist training are essential to strengthen its role in strategic peacebuilding during
elections.

students. The study recommended that radio stations targeting university students
should create a balanced format that includes a mix of content and segments,
incorporate audience participation and diverse perspectives, and feature knowledgeable
hosts and high-quality guests. Radio talk show presenters should analyze their audience
effectively and employ communication strategies that foster engagement, such as active
listening and utilizing multiple modes of communication. Radio stations should
consider factors beyond music preference when designing their programming
schedules, such as content relevance, interactivity, and convenient timing.

REPRESENTATIONS OF YOUTH SUBALTERNITY IN SELECTED KENYAN SPOKEN WORD POETRY
ORIKO, ROSE
This study examines how selected Kenyan spoken word poets give voice to the concerns of the
youth. It explores how the youth use spoken word poetry to confront stereotypes of young people
by trying to reach the broader listening public through politically and socially relevant poems.
The study is guided by the following objectives: to explicate factors that make spoken word
poetry more accessible and easily appropriated by subaltern groups amplifying the performance
of their experiences; to investigate the recurring themes highlighting the fluidity of subaltern
identities amongst Kenyan youths revealing resistance, and; to interrogate spoken word’s poetic
dialogic conversations woven with other voices, enriching meaning within existing canons. The
study analyses the works of selected spoken word poets examining how formal, stylistic, and
performance techniques chosen by the selected artists facilitate the representation of the realities
of Kenyan youth. To this end, the form of the text is read through the lens of formalism, the
concept of literariness by Jakobson to articulate the experiences of young people and to offer
resistance. While the thematic issues are analyzed by Spivak’s concept of subalternity to inform
how young people navigate limitations imposed on them. Bakhtin’s concept of dialogism creates
spaces of resistance and collective identity formation. The study uses qualitative research
approaches to gather textual data from the selected texts. Therefore, the paradigms, methods and
other methodological considerations are in line with qualitative methods. The significance of this
study lies in its ability to raise awareness of a genre that can be used as a tool for pedagogy and
adopted by the youth for talent promotion, making fascinating interventions in the study of
spoken word as an art form and the way it is interpreted. It significantly contributes to
knowledge about how cultural, creative industries can promote youth economic empowerment,
hence informing policy in this area on county and national level and promotion activities
targeting the youths. The study found out that spoken word poetry provides a vital platform for
Kenyan youth to articulate their subaltern experiences, challenge dominant discourses, and
envision alternative futures.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AND STUDENTS’ TEST SCORES IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BUNGOMA COUNTY, KENYA
Masibo, Carolyne Nakhumicha
Research on Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Kenya among school-going students has
mainly dwelt on the negative consequences of violence as opposed to the effects on internal
test scores. This research aimed at investigating the relationship between gender-based
violence and the test scores of students in public secondary schools in Bungoma County. The
objectives were; to establish the relationship between physical forms of gender-based
violence and students’ test scores in public secondary schools in Bungoma County; to
determine the relationship between sexual forms of gender-based violence and students’ test
scores in public secondary schools in Bungoma County; to examine the relationship between
psychological forms of gender-based violence and students’ test scores in public secondary
schools in Bungoma County and to assess the effectiveness of the policy frameworks on
gender-based violence in public secondary schools in Bungoma County. The research was
grounded on Social Feminism theory and Resilience theory. The research design used was
correlational, and the sampling was stratified random, where 184 secondary schools were
chosen out of 342. A sample of 1,104 students was determined in the target population of
250,000 through a simple random sampling to be involved in the study. Purposive sampling
was utilized to select 184 heads of Guidance and Counseling teachers, 3 Sub-County
Directors of Education,13 GBV survivors and one County Woman Representative.
Information gathering was done through questionnaires, interviews, and analysis of
documents. The students were offered questionnaires face-to-face, thus the researcher could
make the instructions understandable and answer any questions or concerns that arose. The
pilot study was conducted in one of the sub-county mixed day secondary schools in
Bungoma County, which was not included in the main study.Reliability of the research
instruments was checked using the Cronbach's Alpha coefficient. Qualitative and quantitative
research methods were employed, and quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and
inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics involved bar charts and pie charts, whereas
inferential statistics involved Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and analysis of variance
(ANOVA).Interviews and document reviews were used as qualitative data collection
methods; therefore, the data were discussed with the help of the theme and discourse analysis
and presented in the form of narratives and quotations. Data analysis was done using SPSS
version 26. A statistically significant but weak negative correlation was observed between
physical assault and academic performance (r = –.074, p = .043). This suggests that increased
experiences of physical assault are modestly associated with lower academic outcomes. The
Pearson correlation coefficient for sexual GBV was -0.45, which showed a moderate
negative correlation between test scores and sexual violence. This implied that the more the
frequency of sexual violence, the lower the test scores. The Pearson correlation coefficient
between psychological violence and academic outcomes was -0.076 with a significance level
of 0.037, implying a weak adverse effect which meant that students who were victims of
psychological violence were likely to record low scores in tests. The research concluded that
GBV in Bungoma County in the public secondary schools has a negative impact on the
performance of the students. Based on these results, it is further suggested that the schools
and policymakers need to intensify their efforts to prevent and report gender-based violence,
improve counseling and psychosocial assistance to victims, and fully implement the national
policies on gender-based violence to enable the learners to have a safer and more conducive
learning environment.
